night market--awesome street foods... this stall shown here was selling 大肠包小肠, which seems to be a popular item. I got it from another stall that has a crowd... it turned out to be a sausage wrapped in sticky rice with cabbage and some other good stuff. It was very tasty!!!!

Mussels were delish! and fries were okay.

Soft-shell crab! It was fantastic. But a little to the salty side. Bottom of the crabs were some vege, asparagus, chive olive oil (the green stuff), and corn purree (if i'm not mistaken). The corn purree wasn't my favorite, but the crabs were great.

As a curious person, I am not only hungry for food, I am also hungry for ideas, thoughts and knowledge. I ask questions and follow it up with some answers. Question: what makes people cool? The first image I related to when it comes to "cool" was Johnny Depp. So I proceeded to google him in search for some clues. Long story short, it led me to a couple of blogs and then the answers started to surface.

I especially like what Adam Ferrier said; and apparently these are from his thesis in Clinical Psychology, entitled "Identifying the Underlying Constructs of Cool People". He appropriately attached a picture of Albert Einstein. Here it is and I can't agree more:

Self Belief and Confidence: Have a strong internal locus of control and are not afraid to be themselves no matter the social situation.

Defying Convention: Will be in careers that are born out of true passion (human rights, sciences, the arts) and will follow their passions - even if unconventional

Understated Achievement: Successful but not overly showy. Further they regulate their outward expressiveness. They appear in control and not overly 'emotional'.

I couldn't believe what I saw at the Chinese grocery store today! It was Kuih Bangkit ! Kuih Bangkits are usually eaten during Chinese new year in Malaysia and probably Singapore as well. "Kuih" means cake in Malay. So, judging from its name, it is not likely to originate from China, even though it is one of the Chinese new year cookies. It is probably Nyonya. (Nyonya is a mixed culture from the inter-marriage of Chinese immigrants and local Malays. These immigrants were followers of a Chinese princess who is married to the Malay Sultan in the 15th century.) The translation on the packet says "coconut cookies"; I guess it has coconut in it. ;p It is imported from Malaysia and made by a famous company called "Ping Pong". Cute name, isn't it? The company makes great cookies and crackers.

Kuih Bangkit and a cup of coffee made a great Sunday afternoon. :)

Eats and Draws

After a long day (I mean a long week), I had a friend over for mooncake and tea. As usual, I ate more than I intended to. As though I wasn't overeating enough, instead of a jog, I decided to go out for Indian food later in the evening.

I used to think that there's nothing better than Mamak stalls in terms of Indian food. Whilst Mamak is still the best in the world, Tandoor of India is gradually growing on me. I have heard about the jazz music at Tandoor on Friday nights for a long time. Tonight, I got to experience it. I quite recommend it! :) While you are sweating from the spices in your dish, you can also enjoy what I call "new age jazz" by a musician who plays flute, bongo and something that looks like a cajon with recorded music as a background. This is accompanied by a charming lady dancing in Arabian costume. Very interesting indeed. The music is actually really good and soothing. I enjoyed their performance. And not to mention, the food was fantastic. I ordered a 7.5 spice level (I threw in a zero-point-five to be funny ;p and it's out of a scale of 1 to 10) and it was just spicy enough for a slight tingling sensation. Loved it! However, I can take a lot of heat. So you may want to try a lower spice level to start out.

After my spicy meal, I had to have some sake. Sipping the sake somehow triggered my creativity and I was inspired to draw. So here is the final product. It is not my best piece, but it is what it is on a late Friday night. And can I blame the pipette for my paralyzed thumb?

Had a friend over tonight. We had this bottle of Spanish wine with my signature curry chicken, with bok choi and a Spanish potato dish as a side. The wine is fruity, flavorful, but not sweet. Very smooth. Will definitely get it again!

No messy coffee grind. Just insert a coffee "pod", kinda looks like a tea bag and push the button. Voila!

Cabbage, Potatoes and Chicken Medley

Thai Rice Flour - 16 oz

Stir fry: Organic Cabbage, potatoes and chicken with rice.

If you are busy and hungry, cabbage is your best bet. Cabbage lasts for a long time too.

Cut up the cabbage
Slice the potatoes (thin)
Cut chicken into strips

Fry potatoes, a couple minutes later, add some soy sauce. (I cannot explain why it tastes so good when soy sauce is added before it is fully fried, or cooked. Somehow it tastes different!)
Wait till potato is a little brown on the skin.
Add chicken (semi-cooked or fried) to the potatoes. Keep cookin. Add a touch of black bean sauce.
(Opt.) Mix a shot-glass-full of Thai rice flour (in water) mixture. Add to chicken.
When chicken looks ready, add cabbage. Cook until cabbage is cooked. Cabbage may shrink. Add salt and pepper to taste. (Less is more. Start with little.)
Ready to eat with rice.

Involves only one pan/wok and a rice cooker.

Sometimes I forget, but that is why I subscribe to Jim Rohn's newsletters. He asks the question: what constitutes a good life? Here are a few things he mentioned:

Productivity. I used to say that you are remembered for what you did, not what you don't do. And Jim answered "You won't be happy if you don't produce." That may explain why I feel a sense of serenity only after I spend hours at the microscope, cleaning the toilets, doing the laundry. Petty things, but I did something; I am living life.
Good friends. This 0ne is a no-brainer. "Friendship is probably the greatest support system in the world." And, "Friends are those wonderful people who know all about you and still like you." At the end of the day, whether I laughed or fought with my friends, I feel content. After all, we humans are social animals.
Culture. Totally agree with this one. It simply makes life richer.
Don't miss anything. He said his parents taught him this -- "Don't miss the game. Don't miss the performance, don't miss the movie, don't miss the show, don't miss the dance. Go to everything you possibly can. Buy a ticket to everything you possibly can. Go see everything and experience all you possibly can." Hey! Maybe I was friends with his parents in my previous life.
Family and the inner circle. Even though I tend to forget, family is one of the most important, if not the most, aspects in life. I for one tend to get self-absorbed, thinking that I am too busy. But heck, it only takes a few minutes to call granny, parents and you, my friend. :) That's why I got Jim to remind me.

Since we can choose, why not live a vital life. Right?
Oh, don't forget to eat well too. :)

Hot Chocolate-Ghirardelli style

Heat milk up
Add two HEAPING spoons (teaspoon, I guess) of Ghirardelli mocha powder :)
(Opt.) Add a spoonful of instant coffee powder. Nescafe works for me so far. Chocolate and coffee are best friends!
Stir and enjoy!!!

Orange Chicken and Potatoes

Orange Chicken:

When you have time, mix wine, salt, pepper, and anything else you like :) Think of the taste you want your tongue to feel. Let the chicken sit in the marinade in a ziploc bag in the fridge until you are ready (or hungry).
Put chicken in a baking dish, pour some (remember, less is more, start with only a little) olive oil, some orange juice. (Orange ginger marinating sauce, optional.) Season with some paprika, more pepper, cilantro, "italian seasoning" etc. and mix. If you have ginger, add a few slices. (I didn't use it at the time because I found mine grew horns. Gasp!) Make sure chicken is covered with seasonings evenly.
Push it into the oven, bake at 450F for about 40 minutes, or until chicken is cooked thoroughly. Slice chicken to ensure it is well-cooked inside and out.

Potatoes:

Boil water. When water is boiling, put in red potatoes. (Rachel Ray says that red potatoes or Yukon gold is a good choice because they do not require peeling. Score!) Salt the water.
Lower the heat and boil for about 10 minutes, depending on how soft you want your potatoes. I'd recommend less than 10 minutes.
Take potatoes out of the water and cut into cubes.
In a bowl, mix potatoes with spices like cilantro, pepper etc. and some butter. Mix, mix, mix.
Ready!

Beer:

Take it out of the fridge! Yea, tastes better cold. Surprise.

No cooking involved!

How to make: Almost-instant lunch

Boil water. (The rate-limiting step!)
Pour appropriate amount of couscous into a bowl. Pour boiled water just enough to cover all the couscous. Season with salt and pepper. Cover it and let couscous absorb the water.
Wash fresh organic romaine leaves and rip it into pieces (no cutting!) and toss'em in your favorite dressing (YFD).
Open the can of herring fillets. :)

Voila! Eat up! Oh, maybe a bottle of beer would be nice too.

From the world cup games that I have been following, a few things are clear:

Never give up, never say die.
Concentration is key. Not just sometimes, but ALL the time.
Practice, practice, practice.
Be confident and stay positive. Before you win the physical game, you have to win it psychologically.

I’m sure there are more, but these stood out for me. Watching the games is not just fun, there are also lots of life lessons to learn from. Viva la FIFA!
